About the course

Gain an introductory understanding of mining and the preparation of mineral products. The proposed certificate connects geological awareness with operational vocabulary, measurements and environmental responsibilities. Southern African cases should show how information moves between the mine and processing plant, with attention to worker safety, communities and reliable records.

Requirements

Recommended preparation includes relevant school mathematics, science or computing and the ability to follow written instructions. BMIT must confirm the approved National Certificate admission route, prerequisite learning and assessment rules. Comparable South African awards and vendor courses do not establish Zimbabwean award recognition.

Course content

The subjects are grouped by learning stage, from foundations to specialist study and supervised application. Complete earlier foundations before the related advanced work. Clinical, laboratory, field and workplace subjects use approved facilities and supervision appropriate to the programme.

Stage 1: Foundations

  2. Mechanics and General Physics. Develop your understanding of mechanics and general physics through motion and forces. The subject develops energy and momentum, then examines oscillations and measurement uncertainty. Use a supervised teaching experiment to compare observation with a physical model.
  3. General Chemistry. Study atomic structure and bonding as foundations for general chemistry. The subject develops chemical quantities and solutions, then examines equilibrium and acids and bases. Analyse low-risk teaching data and complete approved laboratory exercises.
  4. Technical Drawing Fundamentals. Examine symbols, views and their relationship within technical drawing fundamentals. The subject develops dimensions and sketching, then examines instructions and checking. Produce and interpret a simple workshop drawing.

  3. Foundation Practical Project. Study brief interpretation and preparation as foundations for foundation practical project. The subject develops supervised execution and quality checking, then examines corrections and reflection. Complete an approved foundation task within the programme practical scope.

Assessment and practical learning

  • Proposed assessment: short knowledge checks, calculations and interpretation of technical information.
  • Direct observation of authorised practical tasks, supported by an individual record of preparation, results and quality checks.
  • An applied project and oral explanation. Weighting, external examinations and award requirements remain subject to the approved BMIT and awarding-body arrangements.

Practical application

Field learning requires authorised site access, induction and a qualified supervisor. Use safe teaching samples and approved equipment. Student tasks should focus on observation, recording and guided interpretation. Operational mining work and hazardous plant activities require separate training, demonstrated competence and the relevant legal authority.
