Requirements

Stage 1: Foundation knowledge and safe practice
- Carpentry Drawings and Measurements. Build foundation skills in carpentry drawings and measurements. Guided examples introduce drawing symbols and views, followed by practice with dimensions and cutting lists. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use measuring tools and accuracy checks to review the result.
- Workshop Safety and Tool Care. Build foundation skills in workshop safety and tool care. Guided examples introduce workshop hazards and protective equipment, followed by practice with tool condition and timber handling. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use dust control and housekeeping to review the result.
Stage 2: Technical subjects and guided application
- Timber and Manufactured Boards. Build foundation skills in timber and manufactured boards. Guided examples introduce timber properties and grain, followed by practice with moisture and board types. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use material selection and storage to review the result.
- Hand Processes and Basic Joints. Build foundation skills in hand processes and basic joints. Guided examples introduce marking out and sawing, followed by practice with planing and chiselling. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use basic joints and fit checks to review the result.
- Carpentry Assembly and Installation. Build foundation skills in carpentry assembly and installation. Guided examples introduce assembly sequence and clamping, followed by practice with fasteners and alignment. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use supervised fitting and inspection to review the result.
- Timber Finishing and Quality Checks. Build foundation skills in timber finishing and quality checks. Guided examples introduce surface preparation and abrasives, followed by practice with finishing materials and application principles. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use defect checks and care records to review the result.
Stage 3: Enterprise and integrated proficiency
- Small Enterprise Records and Customer Communication. Study the development of a viable small enterprise from a defined customer need. Guided practice centres on a small-enterprise plan and test record, drawing on customer problems and enterprise opportunities and products, services and value propositions. You will record findings, justify decisions and check whether the financial assumptions and customer evidence support the proposal.
- Carpentry Skills Proficiency. Demonstrate the practical skills developed across the programme. Tasks integrate carpentry drawings and measurements, timber and manufactured boards within an agreed work brief. You will prepare resources, carry out the authorised task and check the result. Your evidence should show consistent performance, accurate records and an explanation of decisions within your learner role.
Assessment and practical learning
- Suggested learning checks: explain a procedure, complete a short task and respond to practical questions.
