About the course

Develop introductory workshop knowledge for diesel-powered equipment and its mechanical components. The proposed foundation course emphasises recognition, measurement, tool care and supervised maintenance awareness. Southern African examples should include agricultural, transport and construction equipment, with clear distinction between learner practice and the responsibilities of a qualified mechanic or plant fitter.

Requirements

Recommended preparation is functional literacy, numeracy and readiness for supervised practical work. BMIT must confirm the authorised foundation-certificate entry route, any bridging support and recognition of prior learning. No comparator duration, credits, qualification-framework level or examination entitlement is assigned to this proposed outline.

Stage 1: Foundations

  1. Occupational Safety and Risk. Examine hazard identification, exposure and their relationship within occupational safety and risk. The subject develops risk assessment and hierarchy of controls, then examines incident learning and worker participation. Review an authorised workplace case and propose proportionate controls.
  2. Workshop Tools and Practice. Develop your understanding of workshop tools and practice through tool identification and care. The subject develops measuring tools and work preparation, then examines housekeeping and safe storage. Use approved hand tools under direct workshop supervision.
  3. Technical Numeracy. Study units and ratios as foundations for technical numeracy. The subject develops measurement and geometry, then examines graphs and checking calculations. Solve measurements and costing problems from a practical teaching task.

Stage 2: Technical and applied subjects

  1. Diesel Engine Fundamentals. Examine engine components, four-stroke principles and their relationship within diesel engine fundamentals. The subject develops lubrication and cooling, then examines fuel-system awareness and maintenance records. Inspect isolated training components with qualified supervision.
  2. Plant Fitting Fundamentals. Develop your understanding of plant fitting fundamentals through fasteners and bearings. The subject develops seals and alignment concepts, then examines component condition and assembly records. Complete an approved supervised component-fitting exercise on isolated equipment.
  3. Fluid Power Fundamentals. Study pressure and flow as foundations for fluid power fundamentals. The subject develops pumps and valves, then examines actuators and stored-energy awareness. Observe and interpret a low-risk supervised teaching system.

Stage 3: Supervised practice and integration

  1. Foundation Practical Project. Examine brief interpretation, preparation and their relationship within foundation practical project. The subject develops supervised execution and quality checking, then examines corrections and reflection. Complete an approved foundation task within the programme practical scope.
  2. Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise. Develop your understanding of entrepreneurship and small enterprise through customer needs and value proposition. The subject develops business models and costs, then examines operations and enterprise risk. Develop a small-enterprise proposal grounded in a defined local need.

Assessment and practical learning

  • Proposed assessment: short knowledge checks, calculations and interpretation of technical information.
  • Direct observation of authorised practical tasks, supported by an individual record of preparation, results and quality checks.
  • An applied project and oral explanation. Weighting, external examinations and award requirements remain subject to the approved BMIT and awarding-body arrangements.

Practical application

Provide a supervised workshop and isolated training components. Students must not work beneath unsupported machinery or interfere with live fuel, hydraulic or electrical systems. Practical tasks should follow an approved instruction and be checked before equipment returns to service. The course does not confer artisan status.
