Requirements

Prepare to follow practical instructions, use basic measurements and keep a simple record of your work. The facilitator will introduce the tools and safe working procedures used in each activity. Check the provider's published admission requirements before enrolment.

Stage 1: Foundation knowledge and safe practice

  1. Fabrication Drawings and Measurements. Build foundation skills in fabrication drawings and measurements. Guided examples introduce fabrication symbols and views, followed by practice with dimensions and measurements. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use material estimates and tolerances to review the result.
  2. Welding Safety and Work Preparation. Build foundation skills in welding safety and work preparation. Guided examples introduce workshop hazards and eye protection, followed by practice with fume controls and fire prevention. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use work preparation and emergency reporting to review the result.

Stage 2: Technical subjects and guided application

  1. Metals, Tools and Edge Preparation. Build foundation skills in metals, tools and edge preparation. Guided examples introduce metal identification and tool selection, followed by practice with marking out and edge preparation. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use fit-up and material care to review the result.
  2. Basic Welding Processes. Build foundation skills in basic welding processes. Guided examples introduce welding principles and approved training equipment, followed by practice with joint types and supervised technique. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use distortion awareness and weld records to review the result.
  3. Cutting, Forming and Joint Assembly. Build foundation skills in cutting, forming and joint assembly. Guided examples introduce cutting plans and forming principles, followed by practice with joint alignment and clamping. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use assembly sequence and dimensional checks to review the result.
  4. Weld Inspection and Finishing. Build foundation skills in weld inspection and finishing. Guided examples introduce visual examination and common weld defects, followed by practice with dimensions and surface finishing. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use rework decisions and inspection records to review the result.

Stage 3: Enterprise and integrated proficiency

  1. Small Enterprise Records and Customer Communication. Study the development of a viable small enterprise from a defined customer need. Guided practice centres on a small-enterprise plan and test record, drawing on customer problems and enterprise opportunities and products, services and value propositions. You will record findings, justify decisions and check whether the financial assumptions and customer evidence support the proposal.
  2. Welding Skills Proficiency. Demonstrate the practical skills developed across the programme. Tasks integrate fabrication drawings and measurements, metals, tools and edge preparation within an agreed work brief. You will prepare resources, carry out the authorised task and check the result. Your evidence should show consistent performance, accurate records and an explanation of decisions within your learner role.

Assessment and practical learning
