What you'll learn

Requirements

Stage 1: Foundation knowledge and safe practice
- Textiles, Design and Garment Planning. Build foundation skills in textiles, design and garment planning. Guided examples introduce fibre types and fabric properties, followed by practice with design briefs and garment components. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use material choice and production plans to review the result.
- Sewing Safety and Equipment Care. Build foundation skills in sewing safety and equipment care. Guided examples introduce workshop hazards and sewing equipment, followed by practice with needle safety and machine care. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use work posture and housekeeping to review the result.
Stage 2: Technical subjects and guided application
- Body Measurements and Basic Patterns. Build foundation skills in body measurements and basic patterns. Guided examples introduce body dimensions and measuring practice, followed by practice with ease and pattern symbols. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use basic blocks and measurement checks to review the result.
- Fabric Layout, Cutting and Preparation. Build foundation skills in fabric layout, cutting and preparation. Guided examples introduce grain lines and pattern placement, followed by practice with fabric economy and marking. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use cutting and piece identification to review the result.
- Garment Seams and Assembly. Build foundation skills in garment seams and assembly. Guided examples introduce seam types and stitch selection, followed by practice with assembly order and fastenings. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use pressing and quality checks to review the result.
- Fitting, Finishing and Garment Quality. Build foundation skills in fitting, finishing and garment quality. Guided examples introduce fit observations and alteration concepts, followed by practice with hems and finishing. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use garment inspection and care instructions to review the result.
Stage 3: Enterprise and integrated proficiency
- Small Enterprise Records and Customer Communication. Study the development of a viable small enterprise from a defined customer need. Guided practice centres on a small-enterprise plan and test record, drawing on customer problems and enterprise opportunities and products, services and value propositions. You will record findings, justify decisions and check whether the financial assumptions and customer evidence support the proposal.
- Garment Construction Skills Proficiency. Demonstrate the practical skills developed across the programme. Tasks integrate textiles, design and garment planning, body measurements and basic patterns within an agreed work brief. You will prepare resources, carry out the authorised task and check the result. Your evidence should show consistent performance, accurate records and an explanation of decisions within your learner role.
Assessment and practical learning
