The proposed foundation outline focuses on preparation, careful application and checking finished work. Southern African examples should include everyday building maintenance and small job planning, with attention to materials, cleanliness and clear communication with a client.

Requirements
Recommended preparation is functional literacy, numeracy and readiness for supervised practical work. Stage 1: Foundations
- Occupational Safety and Risk. Examine hazard identification, exposure and their relationship within occupational safety and risk. The subject develops risk assessment and hierarchy of controls, then examines incident learning and worker participation. Review an authorised workplace case and propose proportionate controls.
- Workshop Tools and Practice. Develop your understanding of workshop tools and practice through tool identification and care. The subject develops measuring tools and work preparation, then examines housekeeping and safe storage. Use approved hand tools under direct workshop supervision.
- Technical Numeracy. Study units and ratios as foundations for technical numeracy. The subject develops measurement and geometry, then examines graphs and checking calculations. Solve measurements and costing problems from a practical teaching task.
Stage 2: Technical and applied subjects
- Painting Materials and Surfaces. Examine surface types, coating functions and their relationship within painting materials and surfaces. The subject develops product information and compatibility, then examines storage and waste. Identify approved training surfaces and interpret product instructions.
- Surface Preparation. Develop your understanding of surface preparation through inspection and cleaning. The subject develops minor defects and abrasion awareness, then examines priming and readiness checks. Prepare low-level training surfaces using approved materials and supervision.
- Brush and Roller Application. Study work planning and application tools as foundations for brush and roller application. The subject develops coverage and coat consistency, then examines drying conditions and finish checks. Apply approved coatings to training surfaces under supervision.
- Decorative Finishes and Job Planning. Examine colour, simple finishes and their relationship within decorative finishes and job planning. The subject develops area measurement and material quantities, then examines work sequencing and handover. Complete a small approved decorating brief on training surfaces.
Stage 3: Supervised practice and integration
- Foundation Practical Project. Develop your understanding of foundation practical project through brief interpretation and preparation. The subject develops supervised execution and quality checking, then examines corrections and reflection. Complete an approved foundation task within the programme practical scope.
- Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise. Study customer needs and value proposition as foundations for entrepreneurship and small enterprise. The subject develops business models and costs, then examines operations and enterprise risk. Develop a small-enterprise proposal grounded in a defined local need.
Assessment and practical learning
- Proposed assessment: short knowledge checks, calculations and interpretation of technical information.
- Direct observation of authorised practical tasks, supported by an individual record of preparation, results and quality checks.
- An applied project and oral explanation. Weighting, external examinations and award requirements remain subject to the approved BMIT and awarding-body arrangements.
Practical application
Use a supervised workshop with suitable ventilation, approved products and low-level training surfaces. Work at height, hazardous coatings and specialist industrial applications need separate training and authorisation. Learners should follow product instructions and document preparation, application and finish quality. Online demonstrations support, but do not replace, assessed manual practice.
