This course develops your ability to inspect, service and diagnose vehicle systems through safe workshop practice. Learning combines technical study with practical tasks relevant to Southern African organisations and communities.

Requirements

Prepare to follow practical instructions, use basic measurements and keep a simple record of your work. The facilitator will introduce the tools and safe working procedures used in each activity. Check the provider's published admission requirements before enrolment.

Stage 1: Foundation knowledge and safe practice

  1. Tractor Systems and Service Records. Build foundation skills in tractor systems and service records. Guided examples introduce tractor layouts and major systems, followed by practice with service information and parts identification. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use work orders and technical records to review the result.
  2. Workshop Safety and Tool Care. Build foundation skills in workshop safety and tool care. Guided examples introduce workshop hazards and tool condition, followed by practice with lifting boundaries and fluid handling. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use protective equipment and housekeeping to review the result.

Stage 2: Technical subjects and guided application

  1. Diesel Engines and Fuel Systems. Build foundation skills in diesel engines and fuel systems. Guided examples introduce diesel principles and fuel-system components, followed by practice with air supply and filters. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use service observations and records to review the result.
  2. Transmission, Brakes and Steering. Build foundation skills in transmission, brakes and steering. Guided examples introduce transmission layouts and clutches, followed by practice with brake components and steering components. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use wear indicators and supervisor referral to review the result.
  3. Tractor Hydraulics and Hitches. Build foundation skills in tractor hydraulics and hitches. Guided examples introduce hydraulic principles and hoses and fittings, followed by practice with hitch components and load boundaries. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use leak observations and isolation principles to review the result.
  4. Tractor Electrical Systems and Maintenance. Build foundation skills in tractor electrical systems and maintenance. Guided examples introduce electrical components and wiring records, followed by practice with starting systems and charging systems. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use routine inspection and maintenance plans to review the result.

Stage 3: Enterprise and integrated proficiency

  1. Small Enterprise Records and Customer Communication. Study the development of a viable small enterprise from a defined customer need. Guided practice centres on a small-enterprise plan and test record, drawing on customer problems and enterprise opportunities and products, services and value propositions. You will record findings, justify decisions and check whether the financial assumptions and customer evidence support the proposal.
  2. Tractor Maintenance Skills Proficiency. Demonstrate the practical skills developed across the programme. Tasks integrate tractor systems and service records, diesel engines and fuel systems within an agreed work brief. You will prepare resources, carry out the authorised task and check the result. Your evidence should show consistent performance, accurate records and an explanation of decisions within your learner role.

Assessment and practical learning
